The LIFE ScrubsNet project is approaching one of the most significant moments of its journey: its Final Event, which will take place on 28 October 2026 at IFEBA in Badajoz, within the framework of the 6th Iberian Dehesa and Montado Congress.
After years of fieldwork, experimentation, cooperation and knowledge exchange, the event will provide an opportunity to share the main results, experiences and lessons learned throughout the project, as well as to reflect on how they can contribute to the future management and conservation of dehesa and montado systems.
An integrated approach to dehesa and montado management
LIFE ScrubsNet has worked from a holistic perspective, exploring the relationships between the different components of these agroforestry systems and highlighting the importance of managing them as an interconnected whole.
The project has addressed key areas such as tree regeneration, sustainable shrub management, the role of grazing and livestock, soil and biodiversity conservation, and ways to improve the resilience of dehesa and montado systems in the face of current environmental challenges.
Throughout the project, particular attention has been paid to generating knowledge that can be applied in the field, helping to identify management practices capable of combining habitat conservation with the productive, environmental and territorial functions of these landscapes.
Sharing results and looking to the future
The Final Event will provide a meeting point for professionals, researchers, land managers and organisations linked to dehesa and montado systems, offering an opportunity to discover the experiences developed during the project and discuss how its results can be transferred into practical management.
One of the central sessions of the event will be:
“Revitalisation of the dehesa/montado habitat through the sustainable management of its key elements”
The session will explore one of the core ideas underpinning LIFE ScrubsNet: the regeneration and conservation of dehesa and montado require a whole-system approach.
Trees, shrubs, grasslands, livestock, soil, water and biodiversity are all interconnected. Understanding these relationships and adapting management practices to the characteristics of each territory are essential steps towards creating more resilient, sustainable and thriving systems.
