The Terra das Freiras pilot farm, as part of the European LIFEScrubsNet project, has launched a pioneering initiative for the ecological restoration of the montado: the creation of four shrub islands designed as biodiversity refuges.
These fenced-off areas serve a dual purpose: to protect vegetation from grazing and to compare the effectiveness of two regeneration strategies:
- Active regeneration, with the planting of native species such as Cistus populifolius, Crataegus monogyna, Myrtus communis and Salvia rosmarinus, as well as sowing using “seed balls”.
- Passive regeneration, which consists of allowing the ecosystem to evolve naturally after being protected.
The initial results already provide relevant data: an average survival rate of 30% has been recorded, confirming that some species are more resistant than others to the summer drought characteristic of the Mediterranean climate.
In order to reinforce vegetation cover and enhance biodiversity, a new complementary planting with additional species was carried out in January 2025. The aim is to expand the shrub structure, improve soil health and encourage the presence of pollinators, birds and other organisms that are key to the ecological balance of the system. 🐝🦉
💡 These actions are part of the LIFEScrubsNet project’s commitment to seeking innovative and sustainable solutions for the conservation and restoration of Mediterranean ecosystems.
