In recent years, the lack of rainfall has seriously affected the dehesa, causing a significant deterioration in its health and its capacity to produce resources. This year we are facing an atypical situation due to the lack of rainfall, which augurs a long and hard summer for the countryside and the inhabitants who subsist on it. This week, in some parts of the peninsula there has been some rainfall, but it is not enough to compensate for the worrying drought we are experiencing.
Due to the adverse weather conditions this spring, it has been decided to bring forward the irrigation calendar to guarantee the survival of the plantations. In the framework of the Life Scrubsnet project, support irrigation was planned for the summer, but had to be brought forward to April and May. The partner Extremadura Verde S.L. (EXVER) is carrying out this irrigation work on the Vacolchero pilot farm in order to avoid the loss of some of the less resistant specimens. In addition, the aim is to study different parameters throughout the life of the project and the maintenance of the plantations is fundamental to guarantee the success of the project.
