Visit to the Herdade Terra de Freiras estate as part of the INTER LIFE PT 2026 event

As part of the INTER LIFE PT 2026 event, the LIFE ScrubsNet project organised a technical visit to the Herdade Terra de Freiras estate, a demonstration site where various innovative measures are being implemented to improve biodiversity and the resilience of dehesa systems.

The visit provided an opportunity to see first-hand the actions being carried out on this estate, aimed at reconciling productive activity with the conservation of natural values.

Among the main measures implemented are:

Creation of scrub islands

Fenced-off areas have been established where native species have been planted, using techniques such as sowing with ‘seed balls’. These actions help to increase the structural diversity of the habitat and provide shelter and food for wildlife.

Protection of tree regeneration

To ensure the regeneration of the tree population, particularly the cork oak, enclosures have been installed to restrict livestock access, thereby promoting the growth of new saplings.

Improvement of soil and pasture quality

Soil amendments such as dolomitic limestone are being applied to correct problems of acidity and toxicity in the soil, which has a positive impact on pasture productivity and the overall health of the ecosystem.

Restoration of water sources

The renaturalisation of a pond, by restricting livestock access and restoring riparian vegetation, is helping to improve water quality and create suitable habitats for various species.

Promotion of wildlife biodiversity

The installation of nest boxes, bat shelters, insect hotels and structures for amphibians and reptiles encourages the presence of species key to the functioning of the ecosystem, such as pollinators and natural pest controllers.

This visit has highlighted the value of the demonstration actions carried out within the framework of the LIFE ScrubsNet project, demonstrating how the application of nature-based solutions can contribute to improving the sustainability of Mediterranean agroforestry systems.

The Herdade Terra de Freiras estate thus stands as an example of good practice, where innovation, adaptive management and collaboration between organisations enable progress towards models that are more resilient and compatible with biodiversity conservation
