Terra das Freiras boosts biodiversity with the installation of an insect hotel as part of the LIFE Scrubsnet project

Terra das Freiras has been the setting for a new initiative to promote biodiversity with the installation of an ‘insect hotel’, as part of the activities carried out by the European LIFE Scrubsnet project.

This initiative aims to encourage the presence of beneficial insects, particularly pollinators and auxiliary species, which are essential for the balance of agroforestry ecosystems. The installation of this type of shelter helps to improve local biodiversity and reinforce the natural processes that sustain the health of the environment.

The insect hotel, made from natural materials such as wood and reeds, provides a suitable space for nesting and shelter for various species. Its presence also helps to promote biological pest control and encourage pollination, key aspects for the sustainability of these landscapes.

The initiative forms part of the work streams of the LIFE Scrubsnet project, which focuses on the restoration and sustainable management of scrubland in dehesa ecosystems and agroforestry areas. Through various pilot actions, the project aims to improve the conservation status of habitats, increase their resilience to climate change and promote practices compatible with biodiversity conservation.

Terra das Freiras thus joins other sites participating in the project, establishing itself as a benchmark for the implementation of nature-based solutions. These actions not only contribute to environmental conservation but also reinforce the ecological and social value of rural areas.

With initiatives such as this, LIFE Scrubsnet continues to make progress towards its goal of demonstrating that the sustainable management of the natural environment is key to securing the future of ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
