The São Mateus estate is installing a new insect hotel as part of the activities carried out by the European LIFE Scrubsnet project.
This initiative aims to encourage the presence of beneficial insects, particularly pollinators and auxiliary species, which are essential for the balance of agroforestry ecosystems. The incorporation of these natural shelters helps to strengthen biodiversity and improve the ecological functioning of the farm.
Insect hotels, built from natural materials such as wood and reeds, provide suitable spaces for nesting and shelter for various species. Their installation helps to enhance key processes such as pollination and biological pest control, reducing the need for external interventions and promoting more sustainable management of the environment.
The initiative forms part of the work streams of the LIFE Scrubsnet project, which promotes the restoration and sustainable management of scrubland in dehesa systems and agroforestry areas. Through various pilot actions, the project aims to improve the conservation status of habitats, increase their resilience to climate change and promote practices compatible with biodiversity conservation.
The São Mateus estate thus joins other sites participating in the project, establishing itself as a benchmark for the implementation of nature-based solutions. Such initiatives contribute not only to environmental conservation but also to the enhancement of the local area and the sustainable development of rural regions.
Through initiatives such as this, LIFE Scrubsnet continues to make progress towards its goal of demonstrating that the sustainable management of the natural environment is key to ensuring the balance of ecosystems and the well-being of local communities.
